Lasitter family papers, 1807-1845, 1874-1969.

Abstract Letters and newspaper clippings concern Mark C. Lasitter's criticism of the University of North Carolina for allegedly harboring Communists and Communist sympathizers and include comments on Frank Porter Graham's presidency. Additional correspondence concern Lasitter's appointments. Financial records consist of a Lasitter family account book and receipts of Charles A. Lasitter for tuition and fees at Kinston Collegiate Institute. Land records include deeds, a commissioner's report, and deed summaries for land in Greene, Jones, and Lenoir Counties; maps and plats of Greene, Lenoir, Pitt, and Wayne Counties; and published maps of Little Switzerland, Snow Hill, and Greene County. Other items include family genealogical materials; slave records; enrollment and honorable discharge of Greene County African American Burton Joiner, a sergeant in the United States Army; pamphlet of the 1956 North Carolina Annual Conference of the Methodist Church; and programs for the Eastern Carolina Exhibition, a United Daughters of the Confederacy meeting in Snow Hill, the unveiling of a Confederate memorial in Snow Hill, and the Greene County Courthouse dedication.

Biographical noteMark C. Lasitter, Sr., of Snow Hill, N.C., was a land surveyor who was active in local civic affairs during the mid-twentieth century. He served on the University of North Carolina Board of Trustees and was a member of the American Legion.
